Why and How to Clean Your Hot Tub Pipes
Most people think of hot tub maintenance as testing pH and chlorine levels or cleaning the filter.
But your hot tub’s pipes also need regular cleaning .
Biofilm (a slime layer) and dirt accumulate here , which can’t be removed with regular water maintenance.

🦠 What’s in the pipes?
When using the jacuzzi, small amounts of:
- skin fats
- sweat and soap residue
- bacteria and limescale
These adhere to the inside of the pipes and form biofilm .
Biofilm :
- clogged pipes and pumps
- disrupts pH and chlorine levels
- reduces the effectiveness of chlorine granules
- causes musty odor, flakes and cloudy water
Even if your water looks clean, there could be dirt in the pipes.
⚙️ How often should you clean the pipes?
- At least 3 to 4 times a year (with every water change)
- Extra for complaints such as musty odor, flakes or persistent cloudy water
- For new or used jacuzzis to remove old residues
🧪 Step-by-step: cleaning pipes
- Allow the water to warm up to operating temperature (± 35–38°C)
- Add a pipe cleaner according to the instructions
- Products such as AquaFinesse or AquaPerfect are very suitable for this
- Turn on all jets and the pump and let it circulate for 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Let the water drain completely
- Rinse the tub and pipes thoroughly with clean water
- Refill the jacuzzi and adjust the water values with pH+, pH- and chlorine granules
