How to measure your hot tub water quality (and maintain it)

Good water quality is the foundation for safe and clear hot tub water.
By measuring regularly, you prevent problems like cloudy water, unpleasant odors, or skin irritation .
This blog explains how to correctly measure water quality and what to do if the values deviate from the norm.

๐Ÿง Why measuring water quality is important

The water in a hot tub heats up and contains very little water relative to the number of users.
This allows bacteria, sweat, skin oils, and soap residue to quickly accumulate.

By regularly checking the water quality:

  • the water remains hygienic and clear
  • disinfectants such as chlorine work optimally
  • pumps and pipes last longer

๐Ÿงช Step-by-step: how to measure water quality

  1. Turn the pump off for 10-15 minutes.
This prevents the water from mixing and ensures an accurate measurement.
  2. Take a water sample of ยฑ20 cm deep.
Immerse test strips or a digital tester to an arm’s length depth.
  3. Read the values:
    • pH value โ†’ should be between 7.2 and 7.6
    • Free chlorine โ†’ should be between 1 and 2 ppm
    • (optional) Total alkalinity and hardness to prevent fluctuations
  4. Record the results in a logbook or maintenance schedule.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Test at least 2 to 3 times a week and always before using the hot tub.

โš–๏ธ Step 4: Correct the values if necessary

  • Is the pH too low? Add pH +
  • Is the pH too high? Add pH-
  • Is the chlorine level too low? Add chlorine granules .

add products dissolved in a bucket of water first and then let the pump run for at least 15 minutes .

๐Ÿ’ง Step 5: Keep the water in balance with maintenance products

  • Use a maintenance product such as AquaFinesse or AquaPerfect weekly
  • These prevent biofilm and limescale , so your water stays balanced for longer.
  • Clean the filter every week and replace it every 3โ€“6 months

Preventive maintenance means you need to make less frequent corrections using chemical agents.
