Flakes in your hot tub? Here’s what to do.

Do you see small flakes or strands floating in your hot tub water ? This is a sign that something is wrong with the water balance or that biofilm and dirt particles have accumulated. Fortunately, this is usually easy to resolve. In this blog post, you’ll learn what flakes are, where they come from, and how to remove them quickly.

🧐 What are flakes in hot tub water?

Flakes are clumps of dirt particles, limescale, dead bacteria, and grease residues that adhere to each other.
They are usually formed by:

  • the pH value is out of balance
  • there is too little or too much chlorine present
  • there is biofilm in pipes
  • the filter is clogged or dirty

The water then becomes cloudy and the flakes float or sink to the bottom.

⚖️ Step 1: Check and correct the water values

Use test strips or a digital tester and measure:

  • pH value → should be between 7.2 and 7.6
    • Too low? Add pH +
    • Too high? Add pH
  • Chlorine content → must be between 1 and 2 ppm
    • Too low? Add chlorine granules

A correct pH is important because chlorine only works effectively at the correct pH level . If the pH is too high or too low, bacteria will survive and form flakes.

🧪 Step 2: Use a flocculant or clear water agent

  • Add a special flocculant ( clarifier ) according to the packaging.
  • This binds the small particles together so that they remain trapped in the filter .
  • Let the pump run for at least 2 hours to mix everything well.
  • Then clean the filter thoroughly or replace it if necessary.

💧 Step 3: Clean pipes and remove biofilm

Flakes can also come from biofilm (slimy layer) in the pipes.

  • Use a pipe cleaner or a maintenance product such as AquaFinesse or AquaPerfect .
  • Let this circulate according to the instructions and then change the water completely .
  • Rinse the tub thoroughly to remove any residue.

♻️ Step 4: Filters and maintenance

  • Clean the filter at least once a week
  • Replace the filter every 3 to 6 months
  • Keep a maintenance schedule so you know when you’ve done what

Regular maintenance prevents flakes from returning.

✅ Summary

Flakes in your hot tub are usually caused by:

  • Poor water balance (pH, chlorine)
  • Accumulated biofilm
  • Dirty filters

Solution:

  1. Correcting pH and chlorine (pH+, pH-, chlorine granules)
  2. Use flocculant
  3. Cleaning pipes ( AquaFinesse / AquaPerfect )
  4. Cleaning filters and changing water

With these steps your water will soon be clear and fresh again . ✨
